Things that I keep... ...and some that haunt me late at night. |
This morning, I had a thirty minute phone conversation with an editorial manager at Reuters and a representative of Thomson Reuters human resources. I was told my employment with the company was terminated.
There were several reasons that led Reuters to terminate my employment this morning:

A year ago I said goodbye to my trusty MacBook Pro and started working exclusively on an iPad + Linode 512. It was an experiment at first - one that I never thought would last.
Twelve months later and I find I’m still working like this. A combination of Vim and GNU Screen for…
Like many of you, we were dismayed to learn that Google will be shutting down its much-loved, if under-appreciated, Google Reader on July 1st. Through its many incarnations, Google Reader has remained a solid and reliable tool for those who want to ensure they are getting the best from their…
A week ago today, Aaron gave up. And since I received the call late Friday night telling me that, like so many others who were close to him, I have not rested. Not slept, really. Not connected with my kids, at all. Not held my wife except to comfort her tears, or for her to comfort mine.
Instead…
This is a long post but it’s about something pretty interesting so I hope you’ll indulge …
Like many folks, Occupy Wall Street has been some doing good work in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, helping people on the ground.
Now OWS is launching the ROLLING JUBILEE, a program that has been in…
The problem isn’t that [the COO of Chick-Fil-A] has an unpopular opinion. The problem isn’t even that it’s an opinion that I happen to think is indefensible. The problem is that he’s actively trying to restrict other people’s rights. And that’s why this man needs to defend his choices.
The marriage of two gents or two ladies doesn’t affect his life one tiny bit. But: the millions of dollars he spends to ban same-sex marriage affects millions of lives directly. It hurts innocent people immensely.

SlideWriter for iOS lets you quickly move the cursor or select text by sliding your finger above the keyboard. It makes editing text faster and much easier than tapping and holding for every edit.
It does not require a jailbreak, all functions of the built-in keyboard stay intact including splitting the keyboard.
If you want it, let us know - @SlideWriter
I’ve been doing some investigation with Perry Metzger into what appears to be a huge problem with memory management in Lion (I, but not everybody, have seen this going back to Snow Leopard, though it’s worse in Lion. This may have something to do with the fact that I was running the 64-bit…

Like on the Mac, Sparrow for iPhone will evolve fast and integrate feature requests and bug fixes.
Sparrow 1.1 is the first step and here is what’s new:
- Send & Archive
- Show/hide dock badge per account
- Only show specific labels and folders
- Built-in web browser
- Empty trash and empty spam
Bug fix:
- Authentication issue with some Google apps account
- Custom SMTP for Alias
We’re already working on Sparrow 1.2.
The next update will include localization in 9 languages, landscape mode when composing and will allow you to swipe up and down between messages.
What’s up on Push?
Thanks to your amazing support, we feel confident that Apple might revise its position on the Push API. We’ll submit a first version of Sparrow 1.2 including it. This might delay Sparrow 1.2 validation but we’re already working with some partners to include Push in future versions of Sparrow without needing Apple clearance.
Push is coming. With or without Apple.
What about the Mac?
We’ve been busy on the iPhone for quite some time but we’re back on the Mac. We’re currently working on Sparrow 1.6 for Mac. This next release will include a lot of bug fixes and improvements. The main new feature will be POP support.
Finally, you’ll be able to plug your old Hotmail or Live account in Sparrow.
As always, we’ll keep you posted on our progress here.
